Next is degreasing. Used machine parts are usually coated with lapping abrasive and polishing media, which can be coarsely removed; as well as oils and grease which need gentler and more precision cleaning. Both can be removed in the same ultrasonic cleaner by varying the frequency of the transducer, which is essentially a device that converts one type of energy to another. For ultrasonic cleaners, the higher the frequency, the gentler the cleaning action. Hence, a frequency of 25 to 27 kHz for coarse removal; and 35 to 45 kHz for eliminating oil and grease, is suggested. 

Machine parts and assemblies must be periodically refurbished or restored and here, too, ultrasonic cleaners are essential. The first step is to disassemble and then separate the parts that can be salvaged for further treatment. Of course, some components that are beyond repair will need to be replaced. For the rest, individual assemblies and other machine components can be thoroughly degreased in an ultrasonic cleaner – as described above. Next, electroplating is done on those parts that need it; and the whole assembly is then put back together again. 

Take note that when using ultrasonic cleaners, the cleaning solution cannot just be drained away without being properly treated. Even solutions which are marked as biodegradable when new, are no longer so after they have been used.

Ultrasonic cleaning is flexible method of accomplishing both gentle and more aggressive cleaning needs, using the same equipment. It eliminates the need for manual scrubbing. Individual parts that have been pre-treated ultrasonically, lend themselves to further processes such as electro/chrome plating since they are not stained and provide good adhesion in parts to be electro-plated.
